click here for details The Inaugural Used Bookstore Crawl, hosted by Patti McFarland of Book Tales in Encinitas, left the participants tired but ready to sign up for the Second Used Bookstore Crawl as soon as possible. Having registered in advance for the tour, booklovers and ardent readers boarded a coach in Carlsbad on September 19th and sailed down the Coast spending the entire day visiting unique and independent bookstores along the way, stopping at last at the legendary three-story Wahrenbrock’s in downtown San Diego! The object of the bookstore crawl was to point out bookstores, off the beaten path, that the Crawlers never even knew existed. Unlike large, boring chain bookstores, used bookstores are each unique and have their own endearing eccentricities, as do their owners; each has it’s different ambiance and clientele .Though there were many worthy establishments to put on the itinerary there is an alarming trend which, if it continues, may spell the death of more brick and mortar stores; skyrocketing rents for retail space along with Internet sales, may force more stores out of business. As far as the bookstore Crawlers are concerned, the internet will never replace the pleasure of shopping in a good bookstore. All of the participants agreed that the crawl was a resounding success. The second Used Bookstore Crawl is November 14, visiting Adams Avenue and Downtown San Diego. Wahrenbrock’s was overwhelmingly voted back into the tour!
